I’ve been a fan of Summerall and Madden for decades, but watching the 1998 playoff game between GB and SF right now on NFLN, it’s got me thinking about how their style would play in this day and age.

Summerall is very minimalist, which I love, but others have been criticized for utilizing a drier, more minimal style (like Buck in the 00s and early 10s). I know not everyone can be Harlan, but I wonder how many modern fans would find Summerall’s simpler style dull.

And Madden, while he’s deservedly revered and iconic, he does feel like a product of another time. No cynicism, generally upbeat, no hot takes or salacious comments. Just a fun-loving guy who clearly loves football, and can distill the strategy of the game for the Everyman.

I dunno, just some thoughts I had watching Andy Reid’s last non-head coach day of employment.
