What is the origin of the trope where a character receiving an urgent phone call will tell the person on the other end to "Slow down!" while relaying their message?

Has anyone ever done this in real life? I see it constantly in various tv shows and movies, but I don’t remember any instance of someone speaking so fast over the phone that I had to tell them to slow down.
