In these unprecedented times (shoutout 2020), do you foresee our expanded playoff model existing long enough with both P4 and G5 conferences to see a G5 school win round 1?
Let’s say we give the G5 team a 5% chance to win Round 1, and therefore you’d expect it to happen about every 20 years. I just don’t anticipate the G5 being allowed a seat at the table long enough for the stars to align.
I hope I’m wrong because it would be so amazing to see a 12 seed go into a 5 seed’s massive, hostile stadium and leave the crowd stunned. Imagine, for example, New Mexico State visiting Auburn. Or Georgia State driving up I-75 to play Tennessee. How about a Georgia Southern at Florida match up? Maybe Georgia Tech draws The Citadel?
Edit: Oops, that last one couldn’t happen since The Citadel is FCS!
If the G5 does ever split off into their own playoff, wouldn’t it be cool if their season started earlier so that their playoff would finish in November and then their champion would earn a spot in the CFP?
