I know that one of the difficulties with lottery winners is that they often have to pay taxes on the winnings. Which means that they don’t actually win the amount they appear to on the prize announcement. They win some smaller amount that they actually take home.
I assume the same is true of money you win on a game show, whatever it is. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder about the idea of winning a car or some other prize. Cars come with costs like insurance and repairs. This probably becomes a problem if you already own a car because you have to figure out what to do with your old one or if you can afford it.
Do you have to report things like trips on your taxes? Other physical prizes?
Or do you have a special exemption for things you win and didn’t buy yourself?
