Was talking about this with some friends, as we all agree Cobra Kai does this perfectly. It respects its original source material and improves upon it, showing layers to the events that happened in the movies as well as depth to its characters in the aftermath. I don’t know if, for example, it makes Karate Kid 3 a better movie but it does add a new POV to the story. Very few “sequel” series do that; they just focus on the characters however many years later and ignore the “past.”
Another example is the Battlestar Galactica miniseries and series. The original TV movie/series is respected in a lot of ways in Ron Moore’s take, not just aesthetically but in giving dimension to the Cylons themselves in the events leading up to the core conflict. This one’s more of a reboot, so doesn’t fit as cleanly as Cobra Kai, but kinda works and you get my point.
Are there other examples that come to mind?
