I had high hopes going into this series because I was a super fan of ER and heard good things about this show. But after finishing the pilot episode I was shocked at the level of toxicity exhibited by the characters towards each other.
Main hotshot doctor: I get it, he knows his shit and that gives him leeway to do things his way. But is there no other way to teach someone other than using an I Am God and you’re nothing attitude? Also threatening to end someone’s career because they didn’t follow your instructions after meeting them for five minutes? But I guess this makes for good drama on a tv show.
The girlfriend nurse: She at least has some redeeming qualities but I didn’t like the childish way she handles an argument with her boyfriend by starting to make out with him, then leaving him with his pants down to get back at him. Also apparently is fine with treating newbies doctors like crap because her hotshot boyfriend knows to “how to tighten the bolt”.
Newbie doctor: He is the blank slate but already is absorbing the toxicity when he snapped at the nurse with the “Don’t look at him line” when he gave her an order.
Head of Surgery doctor: Oh boy, this guy takes the cake. Literally kills a patient in the first 5 minutes of the show, then uses threats and blackmail to coerce everyone else in the room to cover it up. Later, endangers another patient’s life by volunteering to operate a machine he has no experience in order to satisfy his ego. When the other surgeon objects, he threatens to pull her visa. Finally, misleads the public by pretending to operate the machine while the other surgeon is actually doing it. What an asshole.
Machine wiz surgeon doctor: Did she seriously just walk up to a dead patient’s family, told them “He’s dead.”, then walk away immediately? Who acts like that?
I really want to like and keep watching this show but wow, this first episode really left a bad impression. Does it get better? Or is this one of those hate watch shows?
