Hear me out here.

I’m not saying he is my favorite character or even the best character of the last decade.

But he is one of the most interesting and unique by far.

Not because of sex with sea creatures or because a lot of weird shit happens to him but because the range of emotional taxation, obligatory and nuanced trauma and layers from superpower bravado and cockiness over a veneer of neediness and insecurity, iterally the character has a vast range of depth.

It’s more rare than most realize for Tv characters to actually go through an arc that changes them.

It’s partially why Walter White is one of the best characters of all time.

Homelander is complicated perhaps but has always been a villain, we’ve seen characters similar to him before. He is just written much better than those characters but they are there. Lots of characters on The Boys are one note. They always go back to their original foundation.

Many TV characters never change or develop.

It’s why Sweet Tooth bummed me out, the comic the characters actually grow and change. But by the end of going thru hell in the Tv show none of them changed much at all.

The Deep has gone through so many different changes. Yes there is still some foundation he goes back to and some could argue he was always insecure but I think there are a lot more shades than just that to his character

Am acting coach once told me when making character choices r hat it’s better to be hated or loved than nothing at all, forgettable.

I don’t hate The Deep, I love the character in that it’s different from most and Chace does a great acting job with it.

TLDR: The Deep character dwarves some recognition.
