First let me set the stage for the '79 Seahawks.
Seattle finished their '78 campaign 9-7 and had a lot of promise for the future. They were 7th in points scored and had a young tandem of Jim Zorn and Steve Largent that were expected to improve moving forward.
In '79, they had a bit of a rough start, but were 4-5 coming off a big Monday Night Football win against Atlanta and set to host the Rams in week 10 in a game that had playoff implications for both teams.
The Seahawks then proceeded to have the worst offensive output in NFL history by finishing with negative 7 yards on offense in a 24-0 loss against LA. You read that right. -7 yards
Just how bad is that? The only other team to finish a game with negative yards was the Broncos in 1967 against the Raiders. The Broncos though were the worst offense in the league and were playing against an Oakland team that finished 13-1 and made it to the Super Bowl.
There have been plenty of bad offenses with bad games in the history of the NFL. Plus countless horrible offensive outputs due to extreme weather conditions.
The Seahawks didn’t have those excuses though. Despite the shutout, Seattle still finished 4th in points per game that season and were playing at home indoors.
The Rams had a talented defense, but weren’t even top 10 that season (again, despite the fact they shutout Seattle).
As a result of this game, Seattle missed the playoff finishing the season 9-7 and were 1 game back of Denver for the Wild Card spot. While the he Rams finished 9-7 and avoided a divisional tie-breaker with the 8-8 Saints and ended up making a somewhat miracle run to the Super Bowl.
But on that one Sunday afternoon in November of 1979, both teams contributed to NFL history.
