I spent a lot of time reviewing and researching supreme court cases, federal laws and the evolution of opinion when it comes to 1A. I have no formal legal education but through thousands of hours of research and teaching myself to write legalese I came up with a proposed amendment to Section 230. It was even accepted for review by my legislature and I'm only awaiting a phone call (I didnt realize I would have to talk in front of politicians to defend my idea... probably should have realized that.)
Anyways. I've had long conversations with people of all walks of life and political ideas. Some of them were friends: who obviously know me better than randoms.
Well I was in a group voice chat an they started dogpiling me about my personal political philosophies. Saying things like "why does someone who hates regulation want to propose regulation?" Or "what room does an anarchist have to suggest laws?" And other things that put my ideology before my ideas. One even asked why I voted at all if I hate the whole system (okay that one was honestly a good question.) They aren't the only ones that talk like this but it was then that I realized I need to think this through.
Why do people think that the radical people like myself - those who think the system is corrupt beyond repair- shouldn't be able to take part in that very system? I know it seems oxymoronic to a lot of people, but I feel like I'm the only person I know who can separate my political philosophy from actual politicking. If I had my way there would be no section 230, free speech is absolute. But I must work within the system we have or no changes can ever be made. I tried explaining this to people, but they seem stuck on the thought that an anarchist (am I? I dont know tbh) shouldnt be able to take part in any government because they are anarchist, and participation in government is antithetical to their beliefs.
A fair statement, to be sure. But I still feel we need to put aside our utopic visions to be realistic, so many dont seem to feel that way.
