This great article in the NYT has juiced my already-towering hype for this three-episode documentary series. If you haven’t seen the trailer, it appears to be filmed with all the trappings of a thrilling drama and follows the batshit insane power struggle over who will replace the top dog of the Texas Renaissance Festival. Lance Oppenheiman and the Safdie Bros joined forces for this one, a collaboration that basically guarantees a banger.
Oppenheim’s documentaries tend to depict reality as a sort of fantasy. Real scenes are imbued with such compelling and coherent stylistic heft that you’re left wondering: could the best fiction of all turn out to be meticulously-arranged non-fiction?
