With NFL being in the offseason and NBA already on the last few games, I have lots of time to scour random NFL facts. So here’s part 2:
- The 2010 Chargers are the only team in the 21st century to rank #1 Overall Offense and #1 Overall Defense in the same season and not make it in the playoffs. 9-7 record, 2nd in the divison behind the Chiefs. *currently fact-checking if this also stands for all time
- There have been 14 unique times a player has had 5000+ passing yards in the 21st century. Only 3 players were able to do it more than once: Drew Brees (5), Tom Brady (2), and Patrick Mahomes (2). Bonus fact: Mahomes is the only one in the 21st century to win the MVP award in his 5000 yard season (and he did so on both occasions).
- Speaking of Drew Brees, he is the only player to lead the league in completion percentage (71.2), passing yards (5476), and passing TDs (46) in the 21st century and not win the MVP. The 2 other QB triple crown winners in the 21st century both won MVPs during their triple crown season: Kurt Warner (2001) and Tom Brady (2007).
- Mitchell Schwartz has 4 all pro selections (1 first team, 3 second team, all with the Chiefs) but never made the pro bowl: he’s the player with the most All-pro selections without any pro-bowl appearance in the 21st century.
- In the regular season, Wes Welker has 903 receptions in his career while Julian Edelman has 620 receptions. They both average exactly 11 yards per catch for their career.
- LaDainian Tomlinson, David Patten, and Christian McCaffrey are the only 3 players in the 21st century to have a passing TD, a rushing TD, and a receiving TD in the same game.
- Steve Smith Sr. and Cooper Kupp are the only 2 WRs in the 21st century to win the Triple Crown (receptions, receiving yards, and TDs). Bonus fact: there were 14 unique times a triple crown has been awarded before the 21st century.
- Daniel Jones is the only player to ever be in the top 10 highest earning players of the league-- at any point during the 21st century-- and not have any all pro or pro bowl selections in his career.
- Chris Jones is the highest paid non-qb AND/OR defensive player in the 21st century with a 5 year 158.75m contract.
- The New Orleans Saints hold the record for fewest fumbles as a team (6) setting it in 2011, while the Kansas City Chiefs hold the record for fewest fumbles lost (2), doing so in 2002.
