I think pretty much everyone can agree there were 3-4 seasons of the original Walking Dead that were genuinely bad. They were making I think like 20 episodes per season or something and had to make a bunch of filler/pointless episodes to keep up with AMC’s demand for content.
The three recent shows, Dead City, Daryl and Ones Who Live are all only 6 episodes long.
There isn’t a bunch of nonsense filler and fluffing the stories up - They pretty much all stick to a single story-line thread and just run with it for all 6 episodes.
Not going to pretend the writing is perfect or anything - just wanted to point out, if you had thrown Walking Dead out your window, due to the drop in quality… These shows might be worth checking out.
Them being able to focus on a single story instead of leap frogging around a huge cast and making filler episodes seems to have worked. They aren’t the best thing you’ll watch - But they’re pretty much the best Walking Dead has been in awhile.
Just wanted to let people know - This isn’t meandering and pointless with dozens of stories woven in with episodes to just pad out a 20 episode season. They’re 6 episodes, they’re telling a specific story and that’s that.
The narrative thread is constant and doesn’t lag by interspersing ‘pointless’ episodes with ‘canon’ episodes. You really could edit the old seasons by like 50% and still tell the same story. That’s not the case with these new shows, the narrative is consistent and focused.
I never thought Id look forward to Walking Dead content again, but, these shows surprised me quite a bit.
