It’s on Hulu in the US, I assume Disney Plus elsewhere.
Premise: a cop and his family get assigned to a remote village. Everyone in the village seems really nice, but soon he starts suspecting them of cannibalism. Some of the interactions between the family and the villagers kind of reminds me of Pleasantville (with Reese Witherspoon).
I’ve seen it billed as “horror.” This is inaccurate. Out of the 7 episodes, there’s maybe 5 minutes total of footage that could qualify as horror. No jump scares. If this series is “horror” to you, you’re not going to be able to handle Stranger Things.
The acting and script are top-notch. The cinematography is truly breathtaking. It’s movie-level quality shot in what’s known as the Alps of Japan.
2 negatives. There’s a gratuitous and unnecessary sex scene (though no nudity). And it ends on a cliffhanger, which I know some people won’t like. Season 2 is supposed to be coming out this year, which I’ve heard will complete the series.
All in all, highly underrated, and highly recommended.
