For those too young to remember, the ACC poached Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech from the Big East in 2003. The conference responded by adding Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida, along with UConn moving its program up to FBS in time for the 2005 season.
While Cincinnati and Louisville were great fits, what was the rationale behind inviting USF? It seemed like we were desperate to fill the Florida void that Miami leaving created, but their program was less than ten years old at the time. Adding UCF would’ve made just as much sense and TCU wasn’t considered back then, but why not a program like Memphis who had a solid basketball history? You would think that would’ve attracted the basketball schools.
Also, does anyone know if any other schools were actually considered besides the three they invited?
