I am on the side that was left a bit puzzled by the finale, granted I knew there was not going to be any battle and I knew the fate of Yabu, etc, but I just felt it was missing the usual grand finale moment for a tv show.
Then I realized, it’s because I approached it from the usual finale perspective, when in fact the finale part 1 was ep 9 and part 2 the resolution was ep 10, so it is a 2 part finale.
In that case, it probably comes down to the pacing or layout of the show? As many claimed it felt intentionally dragged on from roughly ep 4 - 8 , maybe that’s why Clavell made sure the original was a 3 part series, as it is a 3 act story, though I agree that was maybe too short.
However I wonder if the praise for 2024 shogun would have been even greater than it is ( if that’s possible ) if it were edited down to 6 episodes instead of 10 or even if ep 9 and 10 were grouped as a same day finale release.
Either way it was a better show than many recently, and Im sure it will get the Emmy for best miniseries. There’s talk they might make an original season 2 based on Blackthorns trade alliance during Toranaga’s reign, depends on FX. The real story this was based on continues with Tokugawa ruling for 13 years, but the shogunate lasting until 1868, so there are plenty of stories to borrow from there.
I also wonder if they will consider editing a film out of it like the original shogun series did.
