I’m new to this sub! So my dad (R) and I (L) were talking yesterday, and I mentioned how legislation was introduced in Georgia to legalize recreational marijuana. My dad tried to argue that legalizing it would increase users’ dependence on welfare and crime would increase - especially theft for users to buy drugs. However, if someone is already breaking the law to smoke drugs, why would laws in place against theft stop someone from finding ways to pay for the habit?

My further counter argument is that if we legalize weed, that’s keeping fewer people out of jail, people aren’t getting records for smoking weed, and this would allow for easier employment of those individuals.

Are there any interesting articles/studies you know of regarding this topic? I’ve seen studies from the university of Kansas finding that there was not an increase in traffic incidents after legalizing weed.
