I have trended libertarian over the past few years, but one area where I have trouble seeing an easy fix is how to handle criminals, in particular those who are imprisoned. As much as I don't want criminals to run roughshod over people, I also shudder to think at the state brutalizing people for years or decades because a panel of idiots decided that proof of guilt met a burden of less-than-absolute certainty.

I don't know about a solution here. Would it just come down to the right of the individual to defend himself?
