Every offseason there is talk of boosters of some program shelling millions of dollars to fire/poach/retain coaches. These boosters seem to be ready to burn millions of dollars the same way I’d spend $10 on questionable quality phone cases on Amazon, so they must be rich, but exactly how rich? I can’t imagine someone who is Bezos or Musk rich caring about college football, so may be they are single digit billionaires/3 figure millionaires who have businesses in or grew up in the college town?
They also seem to have pretty open schedules to spend Saturday afternoons at the games, or host impromptu lunches with Coaches in danger of being poached. I can’t imagine a CEO or businessman having that kind of free time. So, what do these boosters do that affords seemingly so much free time?
Also, why do they even care about football programs in small college towns so much? Why don’t they spend their free time at a golf course or a premium resorts like other rich people. What is the incentive to invest in a sport that has such a low probability of success for any given program?
I don’t know much about how the boosters economy works, so some of these may be really basic questions. There does not seem to be much useful info on the Internet on this. So, I thought folks on this sub probably have better answers to these questions.
