I know extremely little about american football and the NFL but this year I’ve been following the IPP especially the irish lads. There’s 4 of them that are hoping you become NFL punters, 3 are gaelic football players and 1 is a rugby player.

Because of their previous sports, they’re a little stronger than the average NFL punters. Darragh Leader had 23 bench press reps of 102.5kg for example, only 2 off the record for a punter. The consensus seemed to be that while obviously kicking is by far the most important skill for a punter, their strength would be a positive for special plays. They also all seemed to have the punting distance but maybe just not the consistency in field goals due to their lack of experience.

So it made me think, is there a reason that punters aren’t pushed to train their upper body? Is there any negative to it for that position?
