Growing up as a kid, I never cared for football. Didn’t watch it or really understand it. Every year when the Iowa vs Iowa State game came around, it was a big deal at school. People would wear their team apparel, talk crap to each other, typical rivalry shenanigans. I didn’t have any clothes that represented either Iowa or Iowa State so people would ask me who I cheered for and I would just tell them I was a Cy-Hawk. People would try and convert me to
one team or the other and I just didn’t care enough to pick one.
One day I was over at my neighbors house who was an Iowa State fan. We were hanging out and went into his computer room and I see all this stuff about “Sooners” and had no idea what the hell it was so I asked, he explained to me his dad was an Oklahoma fan, and that Oklahoma’s mascot was the Sooners.
Years later, I moved to a new town and went to a new school, in effort to make some new friends, I decided to start trying to watch and understand the game of football. I figured I would end up just being an Iowa or Iowa State fan, but that Saturday, I turned on the TV and saw Oklahoma was playing. I remembered my old neighbor telling me about this team so I decided to check them out. I had no idea what to expect going into it. That day I watched a team put up 64 points. Watching Landry Jones, Demarco Murray, and Ryan Broyles just tear up the field was all I needed to pick my favorite team.
15 years later, I am still an Oklahoma fan, have been to regular season and bowl games, and still get weird looks when wearing team gear, and lots of questions as to why I am/how I became a fan of the Sooners.
This ended up being way longer than I expected it to be, but I figured if I asked the question, I better answer it myself first.
