Her material sacrifices to Frank O'Connor were not truly sacrifices because she took selfish pleasure in seeing him happy. She believed that loving a person you cannot truly appreciate was immoral, as no human would ever wish to be loved 'for their own good'. Love was in fact a mutual trade, where virtue and genuine appreciation was the currency.
