So I’ve been thinking and looking back to CFB history and have noticed national title games or de facto national title games that have had the same teams meet multiple times and wanted to ask you all what is the greatest rivalry of those teams that meet that criteria?
I get rivalry may be a little strong since I’m sure the most that two teams have met in the title game is only a handful of times but it’s still an interesting discussion.
To me, the greatest rivalry that meets this criteria is the following:
Nebraska Miami
Their total head to head record is dead even at 6-6. They have met for the national title on the line a total of four times (Miami claiming three titles to Nebraska’s one) with each one being legendary.
First National Title Game - Tom Osbourne decided not to share the chip and went for it and failed, leading the Hurricanes to a dynastic run in the 1980s. Had he gone for the PAT, the game ends in a tie and Nebraska most likely claims their first championship.
Second National Title Game - In the tail end of their dynastic run, Miami destroys Nebraska 22-0 in route to a fourth national title and second claimed one against Nebraska. Osbourne remains winless against Miami, being 0-3 where two of those games Miami claimed and won national titles in.
Third National Title Game - After a few years later following the shutout, Osbourne gets his revenge and lifts his first trophy in a national title game by beating Miami in a close 24-17 game. This game kicked off Nebraska’s own dynasty as they went on to destroy another Florida team and share an another national title with Michigan a couple of years later.
Final National Title Game - A legendary Miami team destroys and caps off an undefeated season by beating the red and white 37-14. To date, this remains the last game for both teams where they were heavy contenders as both would fall off soon after.
