I really feel bad about it. I think duopoly should be ended for two reasons.
First of all, It will reduce the accountability of government. If you regard certain kinds of political issue as the most important things in your mind. You could only vote one party. Even though this party has many proposals that you don’t like. This leads to a long time ruling of one party in some regions. The chance of power abusing and corruption thus increase dramatically.
The byproduct of duopoly, partisan mindset, makes people defend some bad action of a party. We could see this phenomenon in both sides. Trump’s supporters keep denying the result of the election and this has brought horrible moral corruption. Some supporters of democrat acts like they are actually in a cult. They even support communism and antifa. Partisan mindset is very dangerous for a democratic society.
If there are a lot of parties that propose various kinds of policy, this partisan mindset will be limited for two reasons. First, it’s very common that a small party will cooperate with different parties. Thus, its supporters will have an open mindset. Second, small parties tend to bring more debate and questioning to both main parties. That’s a direct threat to partisan mindset.
Secondly, duopoly eliminates the political choice of people. If you are a libertarian, you may vote for republicans just because you dislike policies of democrats so much. However, if there is a rank voting system, you could support libertarian party primarily without the concern about wasting your vote. Rank voting system will increase the information you use in an election and thus makes the whole election more democratic.
I really think all the states should try rank voting system. I think this will benefit all of us, not only libertarian.
