I’ve always been fascinated by the Syracuse-Colgate rivalry where Colgate was the dominant power and it was up to Syracuse to make beating Colgate their season defining win for decades. Only, Colgate slowly eroded as a major college football program until it eventually dropped out of FBS in the 1980s. But 50 years later any mention of a rivalry between the two would be known only to tye hardcore history buffs.
Another example is Navy-Notre Dame where at its height Navy was a battle between two constant national championship contenders and Navy was a genuine peer of Notre Dame, only for Navy to fall from its glory days yet the rivalry would still be preserved as a big program vs small program rivalry.
