I noticed a trend amongst many of the top Quarterbacks in the league, and I think it could help us project which of the 2024 prospects will have the best career. Here are the top 15 QBs in the league according to an r/NFL poll conducted a few months ago:

  1. Patrick Mahomes
  2. Lamar Jackson
  3. Josh Allen
  4. Joe Burrow
  5. Dak Prescott
  6. Justin Herbert
  7. Matthew Stafford
  8. C.J. Stroud
  9. Brock Purdy
  10. Kirk Cousins
  11. Tua Tagavailoa
  12. Jared Goff
  13. Jalen Hurts
  14. Jordan Love
  15. Aaron Rodgers

As you can see, 8 of the 15 top QBs, including 3 of the top 4 all have first or last names starting with the letter J (with a slight exception made for CJ Stroud. His full name is Coleridge Bernard Stroud IV but has always gone by CJ, he’s not sure why, but maybe his family knew of this trend already: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/what-is-c-j-stroud-full-name-texans-qb-named-after-famous-philosopher/#:~:text=Stroud’s%20full%20name%20is%20Coleridge,been%20passed%20through%20the%20family).

It goes even deeper though:

  • Patrick Mahomes’ full name is Patrick Lavon Mahomes II. That’s right, he’s technically Patrick Mahomes Jr.
  • Matthew Stafford’s full name is actually John Matthew Stafford.

With those two taken into account, fully 2/3 of the top QBs in the league are J named. Of the 14 playoff teams last year, 9 of them were led by J’s, including 3 of the final 4 teams. This isn’t just a current phenomenon, look at some of the greatest QBs of all time, including the two most popular picks for GOAT:

  • Joe Montana
  • Tom Brady Jr.
  • John Elway
  • Dan Marino Jr.

Justin Fields is the current exception that proves the rule, showing that it isn’t a guarantee of stardom, but still a better indicator of success than things like college type or athletic traits.

With this trend, I think we can all correctly assume that J.J. McCarthy is the clear and obvious pick for the Bears at 1st overall, with Jayden Daniels slotting in at 2nd. Michael Penix is also a Jr., so there could be some good value with him as well. Unfortunately, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye should both consider a name change to give themselves another advantage in the NFL.
