I hate what’s happened to the sport with destruction of local rivalies and regional conferences. Obviously a lot of it is due to the suits seeing how much additional money they could extract out of it by consolidation of the richest brands.
Do you think that if players started getting paid fairly back in the 2000s, the realignment would have still happened? If players got paid fairly, there would have been less money for the suits and therefore it may be less lucrative to push for consolidation? Some such as Jay Bilas claim that getting players paid would (somewhat counterintuitively) distribute talent more evenly. And if there was more parity, potentially the big brands would not be willing to take the risk of realignment.
Or was realignment inevitable?
