Pittsburgh Steelers

Division: AFC North

Record: 10-7 (5-1 Division), 3rd place AFC North

Playoffs: 0-1

First, thanks to u/YiMyonSin for letting me participate in this series for what is now my 4th effort.

I just want to note that I left some takes in that I wrote for last year’s post and adding a comment or two to them. This is to keep me accountable on my takes, but mostly because I’m only keeping the takes of mine that were correct and leaving out the ones that were wrong.

General Season Review

The 2023 Pittsburgh Steelers season was……tumultuous. There weren’t really many highs. There were absolutely plenty of lows. I am a die-hard Tomlin fan. But that late season skid with the back to back losses to the Cards and Pats was bruuuuuutal. I wasn’t fanning the Fire Tomlin Flames, but the idea crept in a little, I remained steadfast and Coach T rewarded with another strong finish and a playoff berth. So much happened this year that I forgot about or blocked away until I dove back into reading for this piece. Just an insane season. Let’s get to it.

Also………………………………………………

I’m not gonna gripe about the DPOY vote too much on this post. Browns fans relish in the seethe too much. The race was awesome this year between Parsons, Garrett, and TJ. I understand the double team rates, pass rush win rate argument. Winning your rep is job number one. Beat your guy. But at some point, shouldn’t actually finishing the reps you’ve won count for something? Personally, I think Micah Parsons was the DPOY. His double team rate is off the charts. Literally.

Alright, that’s enough on that subject.

2023 Off-Season

Draft:

This was a great first draft for our boy the KHAN ARTIST. A solid trade up to get a freak athlete OT. Not one but TWO family picks in JPJ and Nick Herbig. We may have the Heir Apparent to Cam Heyward. A player who may be the closest we get to answering “what if LeBron played tight end?” And a couple day 3 picks who had great training camps and hopefully have playing in their futures. We’ll dive into them during the positional reviews.

  • Round 1, Pick 14 overall: Broderick Jones, OT, Georgia
  • Round 2, Pick 32: Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State
  • Round 2, Pick 49: Keeanu Benton, DL, Wisconsin
  • Round 3, Pick 93: Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia
  • Round 4, Pick 132: Nick Herbig, OLB, Wisconsin
  • Round 7, Pick 241: Cory Trice, CB, Purdue
  • Round 7, Pick 251: Spencer Anderson, OL, Maryland

Free Agency:

The thing I think I noticed the most between Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan is the speed and timing of when deals get done. Gone are the days that we Steelers fans don’t get our first signing until the first week of camp. Khan isn’t out here splashing big deals, but he moves quick and gets guys to make this team deep. He is always searching for value.

High Points:

  • 🔥🇨🇦
  • Gunner being cut. (I was gonna put this in the yinzer high point bc they more than anyone hated this fucking dude, especially bc he directly lost a game to the Patriots on a muffed punt and they’re wary of sleeper agents. Too much youtube and facebook, I say.)
  • George Pickens. (wrote this last year, has remained true)
  • DJ breaking the TD streak.
  • Mason coming in and starting his first games in 2 years and honestly balling out a little? Just a great story and if he doesn’t stay in Pittsburgh, I hope he gets the bag.

Low Points

  • When Matt Canada wasn’t fired after the 2022 season.
  • Every snap of Mitchell Trubisky playing football. Also wrote this last year and just left it because, again, it’s true.
  • The back-to-back 2-10 team losses. This was ridiculously low for everyone I think. The only people more energized than ever were the ones who’ve been clamoring for Tomlin to be fired since 2007 and still yammer on about the 2017 AFC Divisional Game against the Jags. It was 7 years ago, move on.

Low Points for Yinzers

  • Every day that Mike Tomlin isn’t fired by the Steelers. This was especially true after the Cards/Pats losses. I thought they might Jan.6 the South Side team facility.
  • The day those NFLPA report cards came out and they realized Art Rooney II is a cheap ass and maybe Tomlin isn’t really the person to blame for the lackluster (aka cheap) coordinators or big signings.
  • Any time Jaylen Warren didn’t get 20 carries if Najee was having a bad game. (God damn I was on a heater last year…this one was true too….at least the deranged yinzers are consistent?)
  • If George Pickens showed any emotions on the sidelines or twitter or whatever that wasn’t the typical PR, canned statements of “work hard, steelers football, yes massa sorry massa”
  • Gunner not being cut after 2022.

High Points for Yinzers

  • This is mostly in jest, but I think they may have secretly enjoyed those bad losses thinking they may finally be rid of Mike Tomlin and his “hollow coach talk”, “hip hop attitude”, and “lack of holding players PUBLICLY accountable” aka not selling his employees out to the media and instead keeping things behind closed doors like a good boss does.

Overall Roster Review:

All-Pros: (I’ll write about these guys in the position room sections…… mostly)

  • Trent Jordan Watt, EDGE (1st Team): The only stat TJ wasn’t neck and neck with the other two in is double team rate, but I’m like 99% sure it doesn’t count chips and non-OL blockers. Hard to send your RG and RT over to a dude lined up in a Wide 9 spot, 10 yards away from the QB. Personally, I think Micah Parsons should’ve won if were going by advanced metrics and counting stats.
  • Miles Killebrew, Special Teams Ace (1st Team)

Pro Bowl Selections:

  • TJ Watt, EDGE

BUT HONESTLY, TJ was a half sack away from being only the SECOND player all time with multiple 20 sack seasons, and by PFFdevil magic black box metrics, half sacks count as full sacks SOOOOOOO he really had 20 sacks on the year. Is that just meaningless?? ACTUALLY impacting the game?? No let’s give it to the guy with the most * THEORETICAL * sacks and pressures.

That’s like this season when the Bills offense had the best offensive EPA and then they fired their OC bc it wasn’t actually working and they weren’t scoring actual points just racking up theoretical points, then suddenly it was working after they fire the OC and they started ACTUALLY realizing their EPA as REAL points on a REAL scoreboard and not just potential points. Should’ve just crowned the midseason EPA leader Bills as super bowl champs based on that ideology. I just think that there should be a thoughtful crossroads that merges realized counting stats, and advanced metrics that measure potential, less quantifiable impact.

Okay I’m actually done with the DPOY bit before I accidentally write a doctoral thesis on the subject.

  • Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB
  • Miles Killebrew, ST

2024 Draft Picks:

  • Round 1, Pick 20 overall
  • Round 2, Pick 51 overall
  • Round 3, Pick 84 overall
  • Round 4, Pick 119 overall
  • Round 4, Pick 120 overall (From Rams)
  • Round 6, Pick 196 overall
  • Round 7, Pick 237 overall
