A good baseball example - The Los Angeles Amgels last year, still several games out of a playoff spot approaching the trade deadline, decided to roll the dice and hope to catch lightning in a bottle instead of trading away impending Free Agent Shohei Ohtani to an actual contender and at least getting something for him.

The Angels fell apart, Shohei was deactivated as a pitcher 3 weeks after the deadline ended and entirely ruled out for the remainder of the season an additional 3 weeks after that. The Angels would finish 2023 with the 4th-worst record in the American League and 7th-worst record in MLB. Shohei would go on to sign with the Dodgers in Free Agency.

Any good NFL examples you can think of?
