No NFL team has ever won 3 Consecutive Super Bowls.

In fact, no NFL team has ever made it back to the Super Bowl for a chance to three peat either.

Something always seems to get in the way.

Crucial mistakes, key Injuries, fluke plays, regression/decline, key players/coaches leaving, and upcoming stronger opponents would get in the way to prevent a third consecutive Super Bowl victory from being a possibility.

Here’s what happened to every team that had a possibility of three peating.

Green Bay Packers

1966: Won Super Bowl 1967: Won Super Bowl 1968: Vets regressed and declined. Lombardi stepped down before the season as Head Coach. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 1959.

It was the beginning of the “Gory Years” for the Packers, a period of roughly 20 or so years were the packers were pretty bad outside of a couple seasons.

Miami Dolphins

1971: Lost Super Bowl 1972: Won Super Bowl 1973: Won Super Bowl 1974: Lost in the famous “Sea of Hands” game in the divisional round to the Raiders.

Raiders QB Ken Stabler, despite being tripped, threw a desperate pass into the end zone. Clarence Davis fought off 3 Miami Defenders to get the ball and score the go ahead Touchdown.

Miami would get the ball back now trailing 26-28 with 21 seconds left. However QB Bob Griese would throw an interception and the Raiders would run out the clock, ending Miami’s bid for a three peat.

If they won the first Super Bowl, they could have possibly had a three peat. However they got blown out by the Cowboys in that first Super Bowl by a score of 3-24 and it was never close.

Pittsburgh Steelers

1974: Won Super Bowl 1975: Won Super Bowl 1976: Lost in the AFC Championship Game 7-24 to the Raiders.

Injuries to Steelers running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier helped the Raiders dismantle the Steelers offense. The Steelers were never really in this game and the closest it ever got was a 7-10 score at one point.

Pittsburgh Steelers (again)

1978: Won Super Bowl 1979: Won Super Bowl 1980: Defensive vets regressed significantly. Offense struggled with a lot of turnovers, 42 to be exact, all season long. The team suffered a few crucial blown leads and losses in the regular seasons and ended up missing the playoffs. Players started retiring and the Steelers dynasty was effectively over.

San Francisco 49ers

1988: Won Super Bowl 1989: Won Super Bowl 1990: Lost NFC Championship game 13-15 to the Giants.

49ers QB Joe Montana was knocked out of the game by a devastating hit by Giants Linebacker Lawrence Taylor. It was a hit so bad, he wouldn’t even play again until almost 2 years later. The 49ers only committed one turnover all game and unfortunately for them it came at the worst possible time. Roger Craig’s fumble late in the 4th Quarter all but lost the game for the 49ers as it put the Giants in prime position to run out the clock and kick the game winning field goal as time would expire.

To date, this is the closest a team has ever come to a three peat. If Giants kicker Matt Bahr had missed the 42 yard field goal, then the 49ers would have advanced to the Super Bowl to attempt a three peat by escaping with a 13-12 victory over the Giants. Steve Young would have been the 49ers starting QB had they made it there.

Despite not giving up a touchdown all game, the 49ers still managed to lose.

Dallas Cowboys

1992: Won Super Bowl 1993: Won Super Bowl 1994: Lost NFC Championship game 28-38 to the 49ers.

Head Coach Jimmy Johnson was forced out of Dallas by Jerry Jones’s ego before the season began. 3 Turnovers in the first 8 minutes led to Dallas being down in a 0-21 hole, a deficit they were never able to fully recover from. They fought back and made the game interesting, but the comeback bid fell short.

A no call Pass interference on Michael Irvin, 5 Turnovers, along with a 15 yard penalty against Coach Barry Switzer for bumping into an official while arguing the no call all attributed to the loss.

The game was basically the “real Super Bowl” for the 1994 season as the two teams were basically fighting for the right to blow out the Chargers in the Super Bowl.

Dallas Fans and even some players have speculated that if Jimmy Johnson was still the head coach, they would have won the Game and possibly not only three peated, but four peated as well.

Denver Broncos

1997: Won Super Bowl 1998: Won Super Bowl 1999: Longtime Broncos QB John Elway who led them to back to back Super Bowl wins retired before the season and rookie Brian Griese started for the Broncos. The team faced the hardest schedule out of any team in 1999 and Star running back Terrell Davis got injured and was out the rest of the year. The team started 0-4 and ended up missing the playoffs and had their first losing season since 1994.

New England Patriots:

2003: Won Super Bowl 2004: Won Super Bowl 2005: Injuries plagued the Pats all year from start to finish. Despite the all the injuries, they still managed to make the playoffs and even win a playoff game to advance to the divisional round. However their bid for a three peat ended at the hands of the Broncos in a 13-27 loss.

5 turnovers from New England contributed to the loss.

New England Patriots (again)

2016: Won Super Bowl 2017: Lost Super Bowl 2018: Won Super Bowl

The Patriots were seemingly a Brandon Graham strip sack fumble away from possibly having a chance at three peating. Without the strip sack play on Tom Brady, the Patriots probably would have marched down the field, drained as much clock as possible, and scored the go ahead touchdown. This would leave the Eagles with very little time to answer, barring a miracle play of course.

Super Bowl 49 hero Malcom Butler was surprisingly benched before the game. Super Bowl 51 hero Julian Edelman missed the entire 2017 season due to tearing his ACL and wide receiver Brandin Cooks was also knocked out of Super Bowl 52 with a concussion. Despite all of this New England still managed to score 33 points against the Eagles but it wasn’t enough as they lost 33-41.

This is based all on the assumption that if they won Super Bowl 52, they would have also won Super Bowl 53 as well.

Now the Chiefs

2022: Won Super Bowl 2023: Won Super Bowl 2024: ???

Do the Chiefs have a legit shot at three peating this next season?

Maybe.

Football is often a sport where almost everything has to go your way. Since it’s single elimination in the playoffs, mistakes and injuries are huge and often the deciding factor. It’s hard enough to get too and win one Super Bowl, let alone two or three.

It just seems like a NFL three peat is always doomed to fail, either sooner or later until proven otherwise.

Honorable mention would be the Buffalo Bills.

They managed to make it to 4 consecutive Super Bowls. However unfortunately for them, they lost all 4 Super Bowls.
