Happy Leap Day! In honor of Leap Day, I’ve found a strange Leap Year NFL trend. Here’s a look at the last 6 Leap Year Super Bowl matchups and outcomes:
2024: KC Chiefs beat SF 49ers
2020: KC Chiefs beat SF 49ers
2016: Denver Broncos beat Carolina Panthers
2012: NY Giants beat NE Patriots
2008: NY Giants beat NE Patriots
2004: NE Patriots beat Carolina Panthers
As you can see, 20 years ago, the cycle started with the Panthers losing a Leap Year Super Bowl, only for the next two Leap Year Super Bowls to have the same teams and outcomes. With the Panthers losing in 2016, the cycle started again, as the next two Leap Year Super Bowls have the same teams and outcomes.
While the cycle does not favor the Panthers, it could be a good sign for the franchise come 2028. If the cycle continues in the next Leap Year, the Panthers should be headed back to the Super Bowl (hopefully with a different outcome). The road to 2028 starts now.
