I know this is possible, it needs to happen. A wood chipper that runs off wood gas, so you can have a wood chipper that runs off of wood chips. After the fire is going, they can even be green wood chips, so it is literally self fueling.
And once you have enough woodchips, you can move on to other things.... like communists.

Yeah, this kind of "woodgas" powered things exist, you can even run cars on this.... but its supposed to be very inefficient, that's why people don't do it

The idea started as an honest one. We could soon find ourselves in a world where gas is not available but overgrown brushes are. If you are going to manage land of any size you need to manage trees brushes and all sorts of scrub.
You can make burn piles and the ash is beneficial, but wood chips have more uses, easier to distribute and manage. If you can run the whole thing off of brush and wood chips, then it's free so it doesn't matter if it is inefficient.
With gas you need a gas station and more importantly $$$$.

I see your point.... not sure what the mileage per hour of effort would be for normal family use, but it would be absolutely necessary for heavy farm machinery, construction etc
Personally I would use wood for cooking and heating, lay down fermentable crops for food and alcohol. Alcohol will be an in demand product, because it would have so many uses: fuel, disinfectant, fun....
For transport, I would jerry rig old mountain bikes to a small trailer.... simple and fast solution for short journeys of <10 miles
