Usually, when a team wins the title in a Top-5-League you can connect that with at least 1 reliable goalscorer of theirs e.g. last season Napoli had Osimhen, Barcelona had Lewandowski, Man City had Haaland, PSG had Mbappé, Bayern had … right, who did they have? Lewandowski wasn’t there anymore, Kane wasn’t there yet. I was interested to know which teams won the league titles without having a player who scored 18 goals or more for them in that season because it seems rather rare.

in chronological order going back in time:

Note that Bundesliga Champions (and Serie A and Ligue 1 too at some point) had 4 games less to play than all other champions except for the French Champion 19/20 who even had 11 less games to play.

As you can see the amount of goals the top scorers overall (not just for the league champions) scored increased massively some time around 2008. 17 doesn’t seem like an appropriate hurdle anymore all of a sudden. Especially when you travel down the list the break from 15/16 - 19/20 seems mad.

In 1995/96 none of the league winners had a goalscorer with 18+ Goals, the only such season in the last 30 years. There were plenty of players (9) who scored over 17 (over 18 actually) league goals but none of them played for a league champion.

It’s not a coincidence that Valencia 01/02 of all teams break any kind of existing logics considering they won the league by scoring only 51 goals in 38 games! 15 of the other 19 La Liga teams had a top scorer who scored more than Valencia’s former top scorer (and today’s coach) Rubén Baraja and only Real Zaragoza and Alavés had no player with 7 goals. Zaragoza was relegated as last, Alavés reached the UEFA Cup as 7th lol

AC Milan in 93/94 scored 38 goals in 34 games, they didn’t score more than 2 goals in any of their league games (but thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the CL final).
