Offseason is here and I’m going back on some old games from some of my favorite teams, before and during my lifetime.

Watching the 1973 Sugar Bowl right now and man was this awesome.

  1. The atmosphere is so intense you can still feel it years later. This was a huge deal and Chris Schenkel mentions they never had played before. I can’t think of a better way to have a first time meeting than this one.
  2. Tom Clements only had 113 attempts passing all season. Thats about 11.3 a game. He definitely could sling it though when he got the opportunity.
  3. Tulane Stadium is the site of the game on Polyturf. It rained and you can see guys sliding around.
  4. We are definitely in the era of the run game. Bama is running a Wishbone attack and Notre Dame, the Wing-T. It is a beautiful sight to see. Football as it was intended to be. Tough, physical running and blocking with deception being part of the attack and multiple backs on both sides.
  5. Its amazing that neither uniform ever changed. Both practically looked the same when they faced off in the 2021 Rose Bowl in the same colors.
  6. The back and forth was insane to watch. 6-0 Notre Dame early and they were outgaining Bama 113-0 until Bama drove down the field to make it 7-6. Notre Dame responded with a Kick Return to make it 14-10 at half. Bama got the lead back by outgaining Notre Dame in the 3rd Quarter 135-9 (at the time of the graphic) but lost it right back, only to get it again.
  7. Bama’s Missed Extra Point would have changed so much had they made it. It allowed Notre Dame a chance for the lead with a Field Goal and they did just that.
  8. What surprises me though is the fact that Bama late in the game punts it to the Notre Dame 1 but they decline a roughing penalty that would have given them the 1st Down. Very strange call. The justification on the broadcast is to try and get a Safety on Notre Dame or at least force a Punt and a chance at the ball at midfield the next drive. Can’t say I agree though but it wasnt a bad call per se.
  9. Tom Clements makes the best play of the game, going play action at the 1 and finding a receiver over 30 yards down the field on the left side for a first down. You can see how much his influence touched on Aaron Rodgers.
  10. Announce Crew was Chris Schenkel, Bud Wilkinson and Howard Cosell. I know Chris and Bud were regulars but Howard seemed inserted here. Did he do College games often?

Overall, a great watch. Definitely can feel some things here thats missing today.
