One common thread quite a few great quarterbacks share is that they did not start in the NFL their first year out of college, but when they did get their shot they had a strong roster and/or staff around them. Mahomes, Brady, Montana, Brees, Warner, Favre, and Rodgers come to mind.
By contrast, a ton of QB busts/disappointments are thrown out as the starter immediately or early into their rookie season on lousy teams with iffy coaching. Some had their moments, but certainly weren’t successful in the long-term. Russell, Leaf, Couch, Harrington, Carr, Bradford, Trubisky, and plenty others.
Of the QBs in the latter group, are there any you think may have turned into good/great players had they been drafted by a better team and given time to develop? Some like Manziel were probably lost causes no matter where they went, but there’s probably some alternate universe where players we know as busts could have been good/great. Who do you think they are?
