It feels like we’re deep enough into the off-season to ask stupid questions like this. Auburn University was Alabama Polytechnic Institution until it changed to its current name in 1960. Obviously the school had a football team under the API name, but according to all media (i.e newspaper articles about the 1938 orange bowl) it looks like the team was known as the Auburn Tigers. Why is that? Wouldn’t/shouldn’t they have been known as the API Tigers until 1960? Also - why the name change in the first place?
