This year Myles Garrett won the DPOY which was also matched by Garrett having the highest PFF grade among defenders with 93.6. In 2022, Nick Bosa won DPOY while having the 4th best PFF Grade. PFF grades are not a be-all-end-all metric, and like every metric it has its flaws, but I think it’s a good indicator of overall play. I was curious how past DPOY winners ranked amongst their peers in PFF Grade.
- Five of the last 10 DPOY winners came in with the top PFF rank among defensive players (J.J. Watt 2014, A.Donald 2017, A.Donald 2018, A.Donald 2020, M.Garrett 2023)
- Eight of the last 10 DPOY winners were in the top 5 for PFF scores
- The median PFF rank (among defensive players only) for the DPOY is 1.5. But in 2019 there was a huge gap between the DPOY winner and PFF ranking when Stephon Gilmore was ranked 46th in PFF score of 82.8. T.J. Watt is the other player to win DPOY while falling outside of the top 5 (ranked 8th with a grade of 88.5)
- Top PFF grades in the last 10 years:
- Aaron Donald 95.3 in 2018 (DPOY)
- Aaron Donald 94.5 in 2020 (DPOY)
- Aaron Donald 94.0 in 2017 (DPOY)
- Aaron Donald 93.6 in 2021
- Aaron Donald 93.6 in 2019
- Myles Garrett 93.6 in 2023 (DPOY)
