I took a stab at quantifying the winningest franchises, beyond counting the chips. I built a scoring system in which a team earns points using the following principal assumptions:
-
The “1st-most winningest” a single team can be in any given season is to earn the #1 seed and take care of business in the playoffs all the way through to a Super Bowl win.
-
The “2nd-most winningest” a single team can be in any given season is to earn the #2 seed and win in the playoffs all the way through to a Super Bowl win. This pattern continues for all remaining playoff seeds.
-
Playoff success without winning a Super Bowl is not irrelevant. It doesn’t matter as much, but it’s a non-zero number.
-
Because seeds are relevant, the regular season isn’t irrelevant. But just qualifying for the playoffs as 0.500 division winner isn’t enough to get on the board.
The Scoring System:
A team puts points on the board by winning (or getting a bye) in a round. The points are weighted by seed and round. The most points a team can score in any given season is 1.0, which would be the #1 winning a Super Bowl. The current last seed (#7) would gets 0.9 points. For each seed, winning a Super Bowl is worth 4x winning a conference championship game, which is worth 2x winning a division round game, which is worth 2x winning a wild card round game. These weights are subjective, so I’d be willing to adjust them should better rationale become evident.
Here are the results updated through Super Bowl LVIII:
Current Cumulative Points Scored
As of now, it’s the Patriots. Had the Niners won on Sunday, they would have taken the lead. This data becomes even more interesting if you look at over time, one tier at a time.
Tier 1: Just in case you needed more proof that TB12 is GOAT
Tier 2: A baby GOAT emerges
Tier 3: All remaining SB winners plus the Vikings and Bills
Tier 4: The Bless Their Hearts Tier
All Tiers:
This is a part of a full write up I did just for fun. I go into more detail on the decisions I made, like data treatments, franchise identification (keeping the Oilers separate from the Titans), the weighting system, why I only did the Super Bowl era, etc. I’m not here to spam y’all, though I would LOVE to get feedback. Please let me know if you’d like to read it.
