Comment on Exploding Heads Migration Paths

Are you interested in running Rabbit Hole with me? It isn’t very active right now, so this community is free to inhabit it and you can maintain the same culture. The users who visit it now are from Saidit, which has a pretty similar culture anyway. Perhaps it’d be a nice addition to Nostr. This way, the openness of a forum is maintained (rather than the microblogging format that revolves around popularity / networks), but you don’t have to be guests with a single subforum. We can discuss how to run it and you can request / make forums. If people migrate, at the outset it would mostly be people from here who make use of it, and I want to get people from related communities involved as well.

I’m interested, but also was thinking this might be an opportunity to back away from forums a bit for me
we have already bounced from forum to forum quite a bit
well what are your thoughts on nostr
the reason why nostr was liked was to prevent us from having to keep bouncing around as much

My first impression of it wasn’t so good. The only android app that’s distributed on f-droid is Amethyst but that doesn’t have group support, nor did any of the other apps I tried. Some of the apps are only distributed on the Play Store, which I’m avoiding. It was only when I tried satellite.earth that I discovered Nostr supports groups to begin with. But then that still didn’t work on Android. Also, that interface hijacks your attention even more than Lemmy. It feels like you’re browsing 9gag when the memes take the centre place.
I would still advice that a link to exploding heads on Satellite is placed in the sticky, though. At least that gives an experience similar to forums.

It doesn’t point to malintent. It means they make use of Google Play Services, but which is bad for privacy. The solution is to flash your device with a ROM that doesn’t have Play Services, if that’s possible, or to disable all the permissions for Play Services. But then you’ll receive notifications with a delay, which is probably okay for an app like Amethyst. But even Session needs to use Play Services to deliver notifications in realtime.
