If you go for an animal, it should represent freedom, maybe Eagle or Lion or smthg.
For inanimate, maybe the statue of liberty or a megaphone ?

It would make Ben Franklin proud.
Downside is most people don't know the history how the American symbol was almost the turkey not the eagle so most people won't get it. Eagle is easier but i like the turkey idea personally
