It didn’t paywall for me. But I put the article in the post body anyways.

The Age / SMH do paywall (circumventably), but I think you get
n
free articles a month (tied to browser cookies), and also I think they mark some articles as ‘free’ if they deem it so.In any case it’s easier to just preempt it and put an archive link in the post body as a matter of habit. That way not only do you not get the inevitable comment about a paywall, but you also always have the archived version if it gets deleted, edited, or the link goes down for whatever reason (temporarily or permanently).
Details here on archive links if you’re not familiar: aussie.zone/comment/7041425

Say some paywall is dissing your fly-girl, you just give 'em one of these:
https://archive.is/<YOUR URL HERE>
E.g. archive.is/…/driver-charged-with-sparking-spot-fi…
You can also try
https://12ft.io/<YOUR URL HERE>
andhttps://web.archive.org/<YOUR URL HERE>
.Make sure you post the link back in the comments to save everyone else that little bit of time 🙂
Another thing you can try are opening the link in private browsing mode or clearing your cookies for the site. Either both these will work, or neither will, so you don’t need to try both. Clearing cookies might wipe your ‘free article counter’ and mean you don’t need to worry about it for a little while, but opening a link in private browsing mode is often quicker, so it’s a matter of preference.
I hope this helps!
Maybe we should make a bot to post an explainer like this? Or the bot could just post a variety of archive links in a comment automatically?
