There a Canadian sports exec named Dick Pound. At some point Mr and Mrs Pound were at the hospital and the new baby was born, and they’re like “he will be known as Richard and will go by Dick, with a hard D”.

From what I’ve heard, the nickname has its origin in 19th century England. At the time, the people were into rhyming names. A short name for Richard is Rick. Since Dick rhymes with Rick, the name stuck.
