  At least in the EU they were forced to allow other browser engines a few years ago, but their “solution” sounds like some malicious compliance (because of course, it is Apple we’re talking about after all): …apple.com/…/alternative-browser-engines/ Apparently you have to request some special entitlement and fulfill a lot of requirements to be allowed to ship an app with anything other than WebKit.

  I’m not sure that’s completely true, but you might prove me wrong; As far as I’m aware, the issue is that a browser must be rendered in WebKit in order to be available in the appstore.

  For lucky users in the EU, that needn’t be such an issue any more.

  In addition, I’d like to see more popular apps offered outside of the appstore to get around apple’s illegal bullshit. With luck, applying more pressure worldwide, as users outside of the EU see how good it could be if you don’t allow the oligarchs to always get their own way.

      Right, but some people do live in the EU.

      I understand the argument is that it would be too much work to make the browser just for people that live in the EU, but building features that most people don’t want to use seems to be their M.O, anyway.

      And also, if people outside get jealous that they get to use genuine extensions in their browser, perhaps they could put pressure on apple to do the right thing. Open source is basically dead on ios, so it’d be great to see a bigger player try to do something about this.
