Armand1@lemmy.world 1 week agoThe tendency for The Independent to pin the video or headline to the top of the screen is indeed very annoying. The bottom ad is also annoying but less egregious.
All that said, The Independent is actually a pretty good source of news in the UK. It’s probably the best mainstream paper for people who don’t want right wing slop or trans hate imo.

Uh, are you sure about that? Its Editor is Geordie Greig, formerly of the Mail, and its owner is Evgeny Lebedev, who Boris Johnson elevated to the Lords as Baron Lebedev of Siberia. His father is an oligarch and former (?) KGB officer.

I can only speak to the coverage I have seen them do. I’m sure they might be biased on some things, but so far all the coverage I’ve seen them do has been progressive and factual.
When it comes to trans rights stuff, they’ve done better coverage than The Guardian, and as a general source of news they’ve been fine to me.
They’re not an activist paper, like Novara Media and The Canary, so I go to those on some activist topics too, though I take them with a grain of salt sometimes as they tend to more passionate and therefore biased on some things.
The Daily Mail, The Telegraph are obviously awful and disgusting to read, so if I do read them, it’s with a 10 foot pole.
