The difference here seems to be that they explicitly know what their “customers” are doing (e.g. terrorism/energy infrastructure sabotage) and allow/endorse that.

Congratulations, you drank the propaganda. They do not explicitly know what their customers are doing, because they believe in privacy and everything is encrypted. What they explicitly know is that their “customers” are not capitalists, racists, fascists, sexists, militarists, or authoritarians because they ask during registration. It is not the duty nor the right of a service provider to ensure how its users use their platform, contrary to what you have been told for decades to justify surveillance. It’s not a hard concept: either criminals can get privacy too, or no one can. Sure preventing terrorist attacks is something no one can oppose, but just like that you also silence every journalist, activist and whistleblower that just wants a secure service without Uncle Sam’s hands in it
