Well, most of those drama comes from misinterpretation of what is a gender and what is a sex. Sex is biologically defined (most of the time). It is a medical data, a fact. You are either a male, either a female, and a tiny fraction of the population where it is not so well defined.

Gender is whatever the fuck you want. It is more like political, religion or philosophy. You feel closer to a certain group, a certain way of living your life or not.
