That and layoffs. When someone is with a company for a long time and becomes senior, not only do they have immeasurable value in their institutional knowledge but they are also the “person” for their area of expertise. They know things or know the person responsible for things. When they leave or are forced out, less senior people don’t have a way to bridge the siloes (outside of dealing with layers of management), so problems go unaddressed.
