massive_bereavement@fedia.io 1 week agoI find it endearing: Cigar factory workers, mostly women, hired collectively someone to read to them to keep them entertained, and in some cases, educated. While I guess you can get a similar experience with audiobooks, if it was me, I would miss the sense of community and live performing.

I used to work construction and I learned that environments that keep hands busy and minds idle have a huge capacity to turn toxic. I think the lector provided entertainment and gave people something to talk about other than each other.
