      GitLab is proprietary, despite being source-available. Forjego, Codeberg (based upon Forjego), Gitea and a couple others are all Free Software.

        Forgejo is a fork of gitea, because gitea was heading to the GitLab model

  I remember when Microsoft first bought GitHub there was a pretty huge push to get off of it and onto gitlab.

  Is there a reason gitlab isn’t recommended anymore?

    A preferred solution is available now.

    Our primary recommendation at this time for self-hosting is Forgejo, and if you would like a hosted service, we recommend Codeberg (which is built on Forgejo).

    the project has begun work on implementing support for the ActivityPub protocol, allowing users to collaborate with each other using Forgejo's features.

    there are non-profit FOSS hosting sites such as Codeberg, who develop their platform publicly as FOSS.

    note, the GitLab Enterprise Edition, which is provided to the public on gitlab.com, is (like GitHub) trade-secret, proprietary, vendor-lock-in software

      Gotcha, thought it might be the license and the fact gitlab is proprietary. Thanks for elaborating further on that.

      Heard a lot about codeberg and forgejo on Lemmy but not a lot outside of here. Liking what I see so far
