copd@lemmy.world 6 months agoin the UK they weigh the baggage area and if you don’t scan something it’ll should “UNEXPECTED ITEM I THE BAGGAGE AREA” and you get publicly shamed by all the whiter than white old people.

Certain grocery chains in Canada employ these types of self checkout scanners. Every item is weighed, your bags need to be on the scale from the start and there’s a camera over each checkout.

Yes you do have to put your bag in a special place. It’s effectively impossible to accidentally steal something without using your pockets
