Comment on UK and US line up string of deals to build modular nuclear reactors in Britain
echodot@feddit.uk 5 days agoYeah you don’t turn nuclear power stations on and off. You turn them on and then leave them running forever so they’re slow ramp up time isn’t a problem.
I recommend you read up on the matter because you seem very fairly intelligent but you’re wrong about nuclear power.
Also you’ll notice in your comment above you didn’t actually address baseload, you just said you don’t like nuclear power. You can’t just build renewables, sometimes it’s dark and sometimes it’s not windy, and sometimes that happens at the same time. We can’t be having power outages just because it’s a calm night.

Okay I think you missed the point a little.yes you keep the nuclear power plant on all the time. Which is fine if it’s night and you need the power. But on a sunny day you end up with a reactor producing power that has nowhere to go.
You can sell the excess power to some extent. Store it by pumping water into reservoir. And a lot of what end up happening is, you dissipate the excess in huge resistors as heat.
But I agree it’s not ideal as a solution but it’s better than having brownout because there are too many clouds.
